Chinese Dairy Imports Update – May ’20
Executive Summary
Chinese dairy import figures provided by IHS Markit were recently updated with values spanning through Apr ’20. Highlights from the updated report include:
- Chinese dairy import volumes increased on a YOY basis for the 17th time in the past 19 months during Apr ’20, finishing up 1.4% and reaching a record high seasonal level.
- Chinese whole milk powder import volumes increased 21.9% on a YOY basis throughout Apr ’20, reaching a six year seasonal high level, however Chinese skim milk powder imports declined 4.1% on a YOY basis. Apr ’20 Chinese dairy imports excluding whole milk powder and skim milk powder declined 5.2% YOY but remained at the second highest seasonal level on record.
- Apr ’20 Chinese dairy imports originating from within New Zealand and the U.S. gained market share from the previous year, while Chinese dairy imports originating from within Australia and the EU-28 finished most significantly below previous year volumes.
