Crop Progress Update – 8/17/20
According to the USDA, the current corn and soybean crops identified to be in good or excellent condition each declined two percent from the previous week. The current corn crop identified to be in good or excellent condition remained slightly above expectations, however, while the current soybean crop identified to be in good or excellent condition finished consistent with analyst expectations.
Corn:
Corn dough as of the week ending Aug 16th was 76% completed, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 50% completed and the five year average pace of 69% completed.
Corn dent as of the week ending Aug 16th was 23% completed, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 13% completed but slightly behind the five year average pace of 24% completed.
69% of the current corn crop was identified to be in good or excellent condition as of the week ending Aug 16th, down two percent from the previous week. The current corn crop identified to be in good or excellent condition remained slightly above analyst expectations of 68%, however. Ten percent of the current corn crop was identified as poor or very poor, up two percent from the previous week.
17% of the Iowa corn crop was identified to be in poor or very poor condition as of the week ending Aug 16th, up nine percent from the previous week. Millions of acres of Iowa corn and soybean crops were heavily damaged by the Aug 10th derecho.
Soybeans:
Soybean blooming as of the week ending Aug 16th was 96% completed, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 88% completed and the five year average pace of 94% completed.
Soybean pod setting as of the week ending Aug 16th was 84% completed, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 64% completed and the five year average pace of 79% completed.
72% of the current soybean crop was identified to be in good or excellent condition as of the week ending Aug 16th, down two percent from the previous week. The current soybean crop identified to be in good or excellent condition was consistent with analyst expectations. Seven percent of the current soybean crop was identified as poor or very poor, up two percent from the previous week.
12% of the Iowa soybean crop was identified to be in poor or very poor condition as of the week ending Aug 16th, up five percent from the previous week.
