U.S. Cattle & Hogs Production Update – Sep ’19
Executive Summary
U.S. livestock slaughter figures provided by USDA were recently updated with values spanning through Aug ‘19. Highlights from the updated report include:
- Aug ’19 U.S. commercial red meat production declined 0.4% on a YOY basis, finishing lower for the first time in the past eight months.
- Aug ’19 U.S. pork production declined 0.5% on a YOY basis as a 0.6% reduction in the number of hogs slaughtered more than offset a 0.4% increase in average weights/head. The YOY decline in pork production was the first experienced throughout the past eight months.
- Aug ’19 U.S. beef production declined 0.3% on a YOY basis as a 0.3% increase in the number of cattle slaughtered was more than offset by a 0.4% decline in average weights/head. The YOY decline in beef production was the first experienced throughout the past eight months.
